• Cake Decorating Ideas

There are many different ways to decorate a cake. Your imagination is the only limit. Here are some ideas to get your creative juices flowing.

    Valentine's Cake

A Valentine's cake doesn't just have to be for Valentine's Day. You can make a heart-shaped cake year round. With buttercream icing in red, pink, and white, this cake is sure to please. Make the cake in the shape of a heart for added effect. Add plenty of frosting flowers and maybe an icing arrow through the center as well.

    Snowball Cake

Make a cake in the shape of a dome and cover it completely with white icing. It will look like a beautiful, edible snowball. Make frosting florettes all over the surface to add some texture and depth to the look.

    Sports Cake

The simple dome can be used for other purposes as well. Decorate it as a basketball, baseball, or soccer ball depending on the occasion and your own sporting preferences. With a different shape, you can put together a football cake as well and serve it to guests who've come to watch the big game.

    Easter Cake

Easter cakes should have plenty of pastel colors-yellows and lavenders and such. Make a cake in the shape of an Easter egg and decorate it as though it's an over-sized example of something left by the Easter Bunny. Or make a sheet cake and decorate it with yellow frosting and white lilies.

    Seashell Cake

A cake in the shape of a seashell is a nice touch that's easy to accomplish. Decorate it with off-white and delicate brownish gold icing that makes it look as fragile and beautiful as something you found on the beach.

    Fourth of July Cake

For Independence Day, you want a red, white, and blue extravaganza. Decorate a sheet cake like an American flag. Or make a cake in the shape of Uncle Sam's hat and decorate it accordingly.

    Pumpkin Cake

When Halloween rolls around, make a cake with orange frosting and a green stem like a pumpkin. Turn your pumpkin into a jack-o-lantern by adding eyes, mouth, and a nose.

    Christmas Tree Cake

A sheet cake with a green frosting Christmas tree is sure to be a hit. Or you can cut the cake in the shape of a Christmas tree. Either way, you're sure to have fun adding in all the frosting ornaments and lights. Don't forget to do something special for the tree topper.

Sometimes it's more fun if the serving sizes are individual. Take any of the above ideas or one of your own and make it cupcake sized. This gives you a chance for variety as well. You don't have to choose between a basketball, baseball, and football cake. Make some of each. You don't have to decide which flower you like the best. Make all different sorts.
